Our Family Vacation 2012

Our family vacation: July 16 - July 22 was a true success!  No reservations were made, no planned arrangements, no expectations.  We were on our way!  With the van packed, we headed out on Monday afternoon (after I got home from class).  Jim drove the entire way - with a few pit stops along the way (to get snacks, use the bathroom, stretch our legs).  We drove until about 10:30p.m. - making our last stop the dark, damp, cabin in the middle of the woods.  We trudged through the waist-high grass and weeds to get to the front door.  Accidentally locking the door behind us set us back about an hour - but we fixed the broken window.  Porcupine Mountains was our home for the next 3 nights.  We explored the adventurous trails and found some beautiful lakes.  We weren't able to find a campground on Friday night, so we stayed at a cozy, running water, fluffy pillowed hotel.  We ventured out on a boat cruise on Saturday - unsure of how sea-sick any of us would be.  The waters were choppy - but we all help tight (okay, maybe some of us were a little white in the face).  We decided to head towards home - stopping in a small town north of Petoskey for the night.  Sunday brought us back to the comforts of our own home!  It was a great vacation - but it sure was nice to be home!

I decided to snap a quick picture of the Mackinac Bridge
as we passed over to the U.P.

Castle Rock, St. Ignace, Michigan
* Rises almost 200' above the surrounding area *
Excellent view of Mackinac Island, Lake Huron and the surrounding area

Chris had to try and get a better view

Mike saw something interesting in the distance

Iron Mountain Iron Mine

The boys wanted to stop by Iron Mountain and see the Iron Mine... when we got done with the tour, both Michael & Chris said that this was their favorite part of the trip... (considering we were driving the remaining part of the time, we were doing good!)

There was so much condensation in the mine that it appeared as if it were snowing!

HUGE mine!
The mine operated from 1870 until 1945 producing over 22 million tons of iron ore.

Lake Superior...

We had a great time swimming in Lake Superior!  The water temperature was quite warm (65-70 degrees)... which is very unusual for Lake Superior!

We kept finding huge rocks that were like platforms & also some "sinkholes"

Michael looks like a sea monster coming out of the water!  LOOK OUT!!

Our rustic campsite at Presque Isle Scenic Area

Here are a couple of websites dedicated to the Porky Mountains:

and

We stayed at this rustic campground for 3 nights.  Although our days were packed full of adventures, the campsite was so peaceful and relaxing!  It was just seconds away from Lake Superior - down about 125 steps and across a blanket of rocks.  We spent a couple of hours at the beach - looking for special rocks and swimming.  I don't think any of us really wanted to leave!

Setting up camp... Jim teaching Chris a couple "life lessons"

Just past the tree is a drop-off to Lake Superior - absolutely wonderful!!

 Rarh!!

The boys wanted their bagels toasted, so Dad got the stove out... they actually turned out quiet nice!

Chris attacking some flies with our makeshift fly swatter - a stick!!

There were swarms and swarms (20-40) of black flies!  Finally, Chris and I got revenge!

Mr. Michael the expert fire starter!

This here, is our "friend" Chippy - we all thought he was cute until we found out he had snuck into our
day-pack, opened the package of our CliffBar and nibbled on it! Sneaky!!

Lake of the Clouds

The one thing that Jim insisted we do on our vacation was hike the trails to Lake of the Clouds... It was breathtaking!!  We started at the overlook...
And then decided to go down the semi-rugged trek 300 feet below.
Mike and Chris acting like beavers - chomping on the tree.

We made it!!  The boys with the scenic Lake of the Clouds behind them.

The boys had a blast swimming in the rather mucky water!
Jim can check off one thing from his to-do list!

We found some rather interesting mushrooms in the woods - this one caught my eye.

The boys acted like the Lorax (from Dr. Seuss) while they climbed into a tree stump.

I called Jim "twinkle toes" - because the leaves were jammed in his Vibram shoes!

The view of the overlook from the lake.

The furthest peninsula is where we ended our journey for the day... the marked trail ended & it was just too challenging to trek through.

Presque Isle Falls

An evening walk turned into a small walk down a trail with an incredible view of these
waterfalls.

Presque Isle Falls is the 2nd largest in the state of Michigan.

Summit Peak Loop

Our journey for the day was hiking up to Summit Peak - which includes a 40 foot observation tower.  This is the highest point in the Porcupine Mountains.

Jim and I overlooking the dense green canopy.

We were feeling adventurous and decided to hike the Summit Peak Loop - which included about 7 miles of loopy paths and narrow trails.  It was a pleasant walk through the deep woods - with the birds chirping and the frogs leaping... what a great day for a walk in this scenic forest!
Mirror Lake

So, I dropped my sunglasses one too many times - and the darn lens popped out!  We all had a good laugh at how silly they looked!!  We had to get a picture!

 Lily Pond

Some tiny saplings in the HUGE, lush forest.  These trees were thriving in the small areas that had sunshine... it's hard to say how many of them will actually survive.
